an African American female with shoulder-length curly hair wearing a gray paperboy hat. She's smiling with a small mole on her right cheek.

Welcome to the Living Better Cafe. First and foremost. Self-published author Katrina Smith, a person of many accomplishments, has written six volumes in total: two cookbooks and four collections of poetry. Her favorite activities include reading and writing.

I haven't written anything on this blog in a very long time, but for those of you who are new to Living Better Cafe, this is a food blog with recipes and money-saving tips. information on food recalls, savings plans, etc. I put the rubber spatula and wooden spoon back in the baking drawer and have been using each blog post to produce something that everyone will like. a cookbook you can always turn to when you're cooking for yourself or when you have guests over.

This raises concerns about the Living Better Café itself. excellent inquiry You will get access to the recipes that I have altered from various sources. Yet none of the cookbooks will have them. So, this blog won't disappear and some of the blog entries will remain fully accessible. What is the situation with the other posts? Because those will be in the cookbook, they will enter draft mode. After the cookbook is released, only a portion of the recipe will be posted; a link to the remaining portion will be provided within the post. This applies to financial goals, etc.

To clarify any lingering questions regarding where I have been for many years, I can say that the college has kept me busy even when I wasn't enrolled. I've produced a talk show and podcast for individuals with disabilities for anyone interested. I've started writing, publishing, and advocating for people with disabilities.

Please stay with me; I will return to provide any updates and to provide details about any upcoming cookbooks.

The Chopping Block: Canola Oil vs. Coconut Oil

The Chopping Block: Canola Oil vs. Coconut Oil

Welcome to: Living Better Cafe, post called: The Chopping Block. The Chopping Block will give you, the history behind two similar products, one that's not healthy, and that's healthier for you.

We know your geared and ready to, pull out the mixing bowls and etc... After years of watching grandma in the kitchen, should have taught you something. Especially, when it comes to baking. Like using cooking oils. Instead of Lard.

What's the difference between Canola Oil and Coconut Oil? They may have some similarities between them. For instance, both obtain fat from plant sources, and carry similar number of calories per serving.

Living Better Cafe, is now weighting out the difference, in the huge fat debate. Canola Oil pertains 61 percent Monounsaturated fat, 32 percent Polyunsaturated fat, and let's not forget about: Omega 6 and Omega 3, and 7 percent saturated fat. In reality, coconut oil has 11.8 grams of saturated fat per Tablespoon, if you were to total it up, that would be around 90 percent saturated fat.

The battle does not stop there, it's time to battle it out with the benefits. What benefits? The Monounsaturated fats. Living Better Cafe says: you heard correctly, the good side of fat, and let's make that Mono-delicious.

According to WebMD, Canola Oil is said to be one of the oils for heart health. Made from crushed canola seeds,[the seed has less saturated fat than any other oil being used in the United States.] Canola Oil carries 7% saturated fat, compared to 9% for sunflower oil,13% for corn oil, [ and 12% for coconut oil.] Coconut Oil does carry a high levels of saturated fats. But, it's plant-based saturated fat found in unrefined coconut. Let's go clean and talk refine, the cleanest form. These natural form helps with burning fat, and give energy for: your body and brain. Looking to raise the cholesterol levels, coconut oil is the best oil to cook with --- in small amount, 2 Tbsp at the least per day.

Living Better Cafe, found reaching this verdict, very easy pease. Here's why, when it comes to Canola Oil, you have one unhealthy fat, Omega 6. Eating too much Omega 6, causes blood pressure to raise, along with heart attack and stroke. Therefore, Coconut Oil is very low in Omega 6 and high in Omega 3. The benefits of Omega 3 helps with brain function. Like, Epilepsy and Alzheimer's to name a few.

Did you know that, Coconut Oil also works great outside of your kitchen space? We are talking skin care. Living Better Cafe, now taking you out of your kitchen space, into the beauty salon, Coconut Oil is great moisturizer for the skin, and hair. It also cut eczema symptoms. Are out of toothpaste? use coconut oil for oil pulling and mouthwash.

Therefore, no reason we chose Coconut Oil over Canola Oil.

Living Better Cafe says: with each person may differ. But, these are the symptoms to look for, nausea and vomiting followed by diarrhea or abdominal pain. Do keep in mind that: some people may have allergic reactions to some. Like, some people are allergic to: tree nuts.

What is Veganism? Its a strict Vegetarian diet that is based on eating nothing but plant based food. People who are Vegan, don't eat any animal source of protein. And their diet consist of: Legumes, Fruits and Vegetables, Nuts and Grains. And let's not forget: Soy. However, they are still receiving protein enriched foods. The Chopping Block: Buckwheat flour Vs. Gluten-free All-purpose flour

Welcome to: Living Better Cafe, post called: The Chopping Block. The Chopping Block will give you, the history behind two similar products, one that not so healthy, and one that is healthier for you.
We all have that one story to share, about Grandma baking in the kitchen. Especially, when you know she's making, your favorite bake good. And you prepare yourself to: help grandma with baking. Like, cleaning out the mixing bowl with your fingers. So, once you're done with helping, you can gather around the table to enjoy it.

Today Living Better Cafe, bring you the scoop on: Buckwheat flour and all-purpose gluten-free flour.

What's all the sifting about? All flours are not the same and, there is a difference in texture and taste as well. Especially, when it comes to Gluten--free flour. Since we are on the gluten-free van wagon, let's talk about the difference between buckwheat and all-purpose gluten-free flour.

Buckwheat flour has a nutty texture and it includes your essential amino acids and it's quite versatile. What is buckwheat? A fruit that's related closely to wild Rhubarb. And it's sometimes called Pseudo cereal, quite interesting hey, you say? Exactly! Living Better Cafe got confused as well. But, we have it all figured out, and you will also. What type of nutrients are found in buckwheat? Antioxidants--- like Rutin, Tannins and Catechin. In fact buckwheat considered a super food. And the major benefits of this particular super food is that it has amino acids, which helps lower cholesterol, and helps improve digestion, like constipation.

Let's keep calm when you read; All purpose gluten--free flour...it not like all-purpose wheat flour because it does not content any source of wheat. Plus, the texture is different. What's gluten--free all-purpose flour made of? The ingredients in making all-purpose gluten-free flour varies...once again it's not wheat. So, what's the benefits? with each ingredient  there are different benefits. For instance, brown rice flour, helps lower blood sugar levels, reduce body weight and protect against heart disease. Therefore, it all falls back on what it's made from.

Living Better Cafe says, the verdict  been reached and, which Gluten-free flour, do we use in the kitchen? We use different varieties...we know each flour has different benefits. So, there was no bad food in this case.

The Chopping block: Sea salt vs. Himalayan salt

Welcome to: Living Better Cafe, new post called: the chopping block. The chopping block will give you, the history behind two similar products, one that's not so healthy, and one that is healthier for you.
What's the difference between Sea Salt and Himalayan salt? The differences between Sea salt and Himalayan salt is the taste, texture and how it's processed.
Sea salt is produce from evaporation of the ocean water or lakes, and with little process. Depending on the water source, this leaves behind certain traces of minerals and elements. Why does it leave traces of minerals? Minerals add flavor and color to Sea salt, which comes in different varieties of coarseness levels.

Himalayan salt, however, comes from rock crystals of salt that been mined from different locations, and mainly from the Himalayan, often from Pakistan. What's with the color of Himalayan salt? Its hue from trace minerals found in the salt, like magnesium, potassium and calcium.
Living Better Cafe, is now here to give you, both sides of: Sea salt and Himalayan salt, it's time to lay out the side effects. We get that salt is salt, regardless of the different types. But, they all have one thing in common, Sodium Chloride, and that's we're the side effects come in... the electrolyte imbalance, which are the ions that live in our bodily fluids that keeps us fueled, and make sure our bodies, are properly functioning. For instance, nerve impulses and heart beat.
When consuming too much sodium, causes potassium levels to drop and so forth.

Which one is better for you? Himalayan salt without a doubt... Himalayan salt has more beneficial minerals than Sea salt. Your container of Sea salt, has 72 particles, and Himalayan salt has 84 essential element that: your body needs. But, don't be so quick to jump, for any Himalayan salt... not all Himalayan salt is the real deal. What? There are some, Himalayan salt, imposters. And to tell if your Himalayan salt is real, Pakistan right on the pack.

Now let's get to the coloring of this salt, Himalayan salt comes in: various colors from White to Pink. However, to spot out the imposters, they have added food dye. Not saying that: Black Himalayan salt doesn't exist, it does, just be aware of the labels... If Pakistan is not on there, you have burned fuel.

Therefore, can you see the difference between the two? Living Better Cafe, hope you have  chosen to live Better.

Weight in: Dog food

Hello and Welcome to, Living Better Cafe, new blog post called: Weight in. Weight in, is a written food review. And Living Better Cafe, has two written food reviews on: Dog food

When Living Better Cafe, mentioned doing different product reviews, they were serious... they're thinking about: expanding it, by adding a separate category. Like, if you were going into a super market.

Before, we jump into giving you, our review on these two brands, the founder of: Living Better Cafe, Katrina Smith, would like to say a few things.

This is Katrina Smith and, I know how crazy in love, you are about your pets. Especially, when it comes to finding food for them. And so, Living Better Cafe, has been thinking about: brunching out to different companies. And looking to create a new category, away from your food... If you could only close your eyes and, imagine Living Better Cafe as a store. Like, super Walmart you would see great place for: Benji or Biscuit. Now, I will hand it back over to: Living Better Cafe.

We had put theses two brands, Pure Balance and, Under the sun, both grain free dog food, to the test. And we will let you know who ring supreme. But, let's get to the review first.

Pure Balance: Grain Free Formula. The ingredients are clear to read, with no fillers, and artificial flavoring, with no trace of wheat, or gluten inside the ingredients. And it's rich in antioxidants.

Under the sun: Grain Free.
Their ingredients are made with farm-fresh ingredients. And when it comes to reading every ingredient, its much easier to know: what is what.

Product Comparison:

Both companies are tied, when it comes to: having Moisture in their products.

Pure Balance....Max 5.0%

Under the Sun... Max 5.0%

The verdict has been reached

Canidae independent and family owned company, Under the sun is the winner...they truly know what: Benji and Biscuit love to eat. Especially, when it comes straight from the farm.
